Bone & Joint Research was alerted to potential issues with this article by a Letter to the Editor. The lead author was then asked to respond to the queries from the reader. A review by several members of the the Bone & Joint Research editorial board and in-house staff revealed a number of inconsistencies between the raw data and the published data. All authors were asked to respond and after several exchanges were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding these inconsistencies, the data collection process, and the study design. After careful consideration, it was decided that retracting the original article was appropriate.
